Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

BMR is the number of calories your body needs to maintain itself throughout the day. For example, if your BMR is 1800 calories per day, then eating more than 1800 calories a day will result in weight gain. Eating less than 1800 calories per day will cause weight loss.  BMR depends on the level of acitivity – the more active we are, the more energy we will need.

Keep an eye on the quantities of food you eat. Even if you are eating healthy, if you eat too much you could still gain weight. BMR is a good starting point to estimate the quantity of food we take.

  • Although the BMR is useful in creating guidelines for healthy adults (ages 20 to 65 years), it does not apply to infants, children , adolescents, pregnant or breastfeeding women and adults over 65 years of age.
